Durfee Conservatory
Durfee Conservatory offers an immersive tropical experience for students, campus visitors, and community members who choose to visit this historic glass house. Durfee Conservatory is valued by the campus community for its serene atmosphere, and comprehensive plant collections. Each house within Durfee Conservatory is remarkably different from one another and is themed. The Rainforest House is the largest space in the complex. It has nooks and seating areas for students and community members to study, read, or simply enjoy the environment. The Bonsai-Camellia House, Epiphyte/Vine House, Succulents House, and Collections House each have a diverse selection of species for visitors to view and learn about. Ray Ethan Torrey Botanical Greenhouse
Attached to the south side of Morrill Science Center, the Ray Ethan Torrey Botanical Greenhouse is a teaching and research spaces that comprise over 6,626 square feet under glass and roughly 1,400 square feet of growth chambers and storage. There are five greenhouses in the complex, with an additional greenhouse attached to nearby Clark Hall that is currently occupied by the UMass Hydro Farm. Curated by Dr. Madelaine Bartlett, the collection includes nearly 700 genera of plants in over 225 distinct families. There are a mix of woody plants and herbaceous perennials in the collection, including unusual tropical specimens like the corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) pictured here. The greenhouses are open to the public M-F from 9am-3pm. Tours of the collection can be scheduled for visitors.
