Peaches in Massachusetts

Peaches are harvested fresh in July and August. Check your local farmstands, farmers’ markets, and grocery stores for locally grown fresh peaches. Peaches, cherries, plums, and nectarines are called stone fruits because they contain a large seed surrounded by the juicy flesh of the fruit. There are over 20 pick-your-own peach farms in Massachusetts.

 

Peach Pointers                            

  • Choose peaches with a sweet smell and ones that give slightly to gentle pressure. Look for fruits with a bright yellow skin color.
  • Peaches will ripen at room temperature. When ripe, store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

 

Nutritional Benefits                             

Peaches are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and fiber. These nutrients keep our bodies healthy and fight off unhealthy germs, help with vision, and prevent colds and sickness. Fiber helps us stay full longer and move foods through our digestive system.

 

Enjoying Peaches                            

Combine peaches, low-fat yogurt, and granola or whole-grain cereal for a healthy snack. Eat the skin, which contains fiber and important nutrients. Blend peaches with ½ cup of yogurt, a banana, and ½ cup of 100% juice for a breakfast smoothie.
