Animal Science Program

Goat Academy

Animals, Learning, and Fun – Consider the MA 4-H Animal Science Program!

Love animals? Curious about how to care for them, show them, or even turn that passion
into a career? The Massachusetts 4-H Program has just the thing for you—the Animal
Science Program has events throughout the year!

Whether you're into livestock, dogs, horses, poultry, or rabbits, there are many chances
to dive into hands-on learning. You'll discover everything from grooming tips and first aid to
showing techniques and proper animal care. Best of all? You’ll get to meet other youth from
across New England who share your interests!

What’s the Goal of the 4-H Animal Science Program?
At its core, this program is about more than just animals. It's designed to:
• Build lifelong skills through teamwork and leadership.
• Teach the science behind animal care in fun, engaging ways.
• Spark awareness about real-world issues in animal industries.
• Open doors to career paths in animal agriculture and educational opportunities at UMass Amherst.

Explore Your Animal Interests
All across the state, 4-H offers animal science clubs focused on one or multiple species.
You can choose from:
• Companion animals – like dogs, cats, rabbits, and cavies (like, guinea pigs).
• Livestock – such as beef and dairy cattle, goats, sheep, swine, and working steers.
• Poultry – including chickens and turkeys.
• Horse - open to both horse owners and horse lovers who don’t own one (yet!).

Learn from the Experts
Through academies and day clinics hosted by Massachusetts 4-H and the UMass
Amherst Veterinary & Animal Science Department, you'll deepen your knowledge in
exciting areas like:
• Nutrition

• Animal health

• Reproduction

• Grooming and showing

And it all happens in a supportive, hands-on environment where learning feels like fun.

Show What You Know

Each spring and summer, youth have the chance to exhibit their animals at fairs and
shows. These events are not just a time to show off your hard work; they’re also perfect for
making new friends and networking with others who love animals as much as you do.

If animals are your thing and you're looking for an unforgettable way to learn, grow, and
connect anytime during the year, the Massachusetts 4-H Animal Science Program is
where you want to be. Come explore your passion, you might even find your future career
along the way!
