Clubs & Programs

In 4-H, youth learn life skills that they need to be successful, both as children and as adults. These skills include communication, decision-making, problem solving, sharing and conflict resolution skills. They do this through a project, which is a subject area of interest. This project could be dog, crafts, photography, horse or fitness, just to name a few.

Youth learn through the experiential learning model in 4-H, also known as “hands-on” learning. This process has youth engaged in an activity and then allows time for sharing and processing the information gained through the activity. The volunteer club leader guides young people through the process.

  • The learning takes place at the club level in towns and cities throughout Massachusetts.
  • Educational activities and competitive events occur at the county or regional level. Youth have the option to participate in these.
  • There are also state level educational activities and competitive events. In most cases, youth must qualify for the statewide competitive events through a county or regional competition.

The Massachusetts 4-H program is focusing its resources in three areas:

  • Science, Engineering and Technology - animal science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, General Sciences, Plant science, and Veterinary Science.
  • Citizenship - Communication Skills, Leadership Development, and Community Service Learning.
  • Healthy Living - nutrtion, fitness, and health.

A network of programs and events is available in these areas to support 4-H club members and volunteers. For additional information about programs available in these areas, see:

Local Level

At the local level, a 4-H club may elect to have any project of interest to the members and leaders.  The 4-H project is the vehicle by which youth learn valuable life and work skills while working under the leadership of caring adult mentors.  4-H curriculum is available to support over 50 project areas.  Your local 4-H Educator can help you identify appropriate curriculum.

State Level Program Opportunities

  • 4-H clubs can take on this challenge to bring three healthy practices to their club meetings.  Turn in the challenge tracker and order free 4th H for Health pins for all club members.
  • State Photography contest is held in June.
  • Action Exhibits and stage presentations in the New England Center at the Big E
members must be selected to participate at their local Visual Presentation Program

County and Regional Program Opportunities

  • Winter Workshops/Winter Forums are held in the Western, Southeastern and Northeastern Regions of the state in January and February.  These are open to all enrolled 4-H volunteers, members and their parents. Pre-registration is required.
