UMass 4-H STEM Ambassador Intern Positions Summer 2025

UMass 4-H STEM Ambassadors are trained to provide direct teaching of STEM curriculum to young people throughout Massachusetts. UMass Extension 4-H Educators train STEM Ambassadors with the lessons Ambassadors will teach.  All materials will be provided. 

Locations for program delivery and target audience is unique to each site. 

  • Plymouth County Extension – youth12-18 on Agriculture and Animal Science and Career Exploration utilizing the greenhouse and gardens
  • Springfield/Holyoke - youth 7-12 on Animals in Agriculture activities
  • Worcester County- youth 7-12 on Animals in Agriculture activities 

Those selected to be 4-H STEM Ambassadors will complete required hands on training about the 4-H Youth Development Program, working with children, and lessons that will be presented throughout the summer.  

Position Requirements: 

  • Attend professional development opportunities provided by UMass Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment 
  • Attend trainings provided by 4-H staff.
  • Assist at 4-H booths, programs, fairs and events as requested during time of employment.
  • Teach assigned lessons to young people at assigned location.
  • Collect demographic information.
  • Prepare kits, copies, and materials for lessons.
  • Complete any financial reimbursement forms by August 22, 2025 

Compensation: 

  • Pay is $17.00 per hour and interns are expected to work 15 hours per week.  The weekly rate is $255. Total compensation is $3,315 plus travel reimbursements as agreed upon.
  • Travel reimbursement will be provided at the allowable IRS reimbursement rate.
  • The standard work week varies by site and is available upon request. 

Locations: 

  • Office locations include Springfield/Holyoke, UMass Extension office Auburn, MA and Plymouth County Extension office, Plymouth MA.  Each STEM Ambassadors will be assigned to one office location.
  • Program sites are determined and arranged by Massachusetts 4-H staff 

Duration: 

  • Payroll paperwork/hiring packet to be completed by May 9th
  • Initial training will occur the first week at local office starting the week of May 18th
  • Teaching materials prepped and ongoing training as needed
  • Program delivery June through August 15th 

Qualifications Needed: 

  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Responsibility for own transportation to and from the sites
  • Ability to carry materials and supplies; up to 40 pounds. 
  • A CORI/SORI background investigation will be required for the successful candidate
