February 2025

March 10, 2025

Weather as Recorded at the UMass Cranberry Station:

East Wareham

Prepared by Peter Jeranyama

February average temperature and precipitation were similar to the long-term averages, but the month had slightly below average snowfall.  The temperatures averaged 29.73 degrees, almost the same as the long-term average. The maximum temperature was 55 degrees on the 27th, a minimum temperature of 2 degrees was recorded on the 12th, and the previous night had a minimum of 3 degrees.  The average temperatures for the nights of 11th and 12th were 19 degrees and this was followed by an average temperature of 35 degrees for the 13th and 14th. Just those 4 nights provided a freeze and thaw cycle that has become associated with some serious winter injury to cranberry buds or vines experienced by most growers caught unawares. Daytime high temperatures averaged 39.29 degrees, the same as the long-term average for the month. Evening temperatures averaged 20.18 degrees, 2.8 degree colder than the long-term average.

Sunshine averaged 51% of the possible sunshine hours, 1 point below average.  Six days had 90% or better sunshine while 4 days had no sunshine. The sunshine hours are recorded at the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, MA.  Precipitation totaled 3.92 inches, 0.3 inches more than the long-term average. We had measurable precipitation on 11 days. The largest 24-hour rainfall was 1.2 inches on the 17th.  February had 9 inches of snowfall, 0.5 inches less than the long-term average for February. Year-to-date snowfall recorded in East Wareham is now 13 inches compared to 33.5 inches in 2022 but better than 4 inches in 2024. Snowfall records go back to 1952 in East Wareham.

Official Winter Season

The official winter in East Wareham (Dec. 2024- Feb. 2025) was colder than normal (1.3 degrees colder), slightly wetter (by 0.2 inches), and well below average snowfall (less by 13.36 inches).  Sunshine (at Blue Hills) for the winter was 166 hours, 32 points above the norm.  The season's minimum temperature was 2 degrees on February 12th and the maximum was 60 degrees on December 12th.  Precipitation totaled 12.42 inches; 0.2 inches above average.  Snowfall totaled 14 inches; 13.36 inches below normal. December was the warmest of the three winter months and highest rainfall. February was the snowiest for the winter season.
