Wednesday, February 6, 2019
Nomination Deadline: April 1, 2019
Deadline for Submission of Writing: April 15, 2019
Faculty, graduate student instructors, and students are invited to nominate exceptional student papers for the Du Bois Department’s inaugural undergraduate writing award. Papers written by Afro Am majors in the last three semesters will be considered (Spring 2018; Fall 2019; Spring 2019). Senior projects-in-progress will be also considered, as long as students are able to submit a draft of at least 12-15 pages to the award committee.
Nomination letters should outline the reasons for the nomination and the context in which the paper was written (for a class; independent study; other independent research, etc.). After the April 1st deadline, students will be contacted to submit their nominated writing.
We also invite self-nominations from students. Students who would like to have a paper considered for the competition should arrange to have a faculty member write on their behalf. Alternatively, students can contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies (brusert@afroam.umass.edu) for assistance with organizing their nomination.
All Afro Am majors, including secondary majors, are eligible. A committee composed of Afro Am faculty and a graduate student representative will judge the competition. The award will be announced at the department’s graduate celebration in May.
Nominations should be submitted to brusert@afroam.umass.edu
