The W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies’ 2022-2023 Workshop Series
Dear Du Bois Department Community & Friends:
The social, political, and cultural work performed by our scholarship remains vitally important—to our communities, to our greater world, and to each other. It is with deep enthusiasm for and belief in that scholarship, then, that the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies invites submissions for its annual departmental workshop series for the 2022-2023 academic year! Submissions are welcome and encouraged from both faculty and graduate students across departments and disciplines; they may address any aspect of the Black experience in the U.S. and the global Diaspora.
Workshops are open to all members of the academic community; presenters and respondents from the Five College community are especially welcome. Scholars are encouraged to workshop works-in-progress including, but not limited to: book or dissertation chapters; journal articles; and other pieces of scholarly writing. Submissions for alternative formats will also be considered.
All Department members, please mark your calendars for the three workshops currently planned: Monday, September 19 at 6:30pm; Monday, October 17 at 6:30pm; and Monday, November 14 at 6:30pm. These workshops are the most generative when we come together as a department to support the scholarship presented. To that end, workshops will be in person in the New Africa House Theatre Room, and refreshments will be provided. Please plan to attend!
If you are interested in presenting, please contact Paul Michael Thomson (pthomson@umass.edu) with a brief description of your topic and your preferred presentation date by end of day on September 1, 2022. These workshops are an opportunity for us to learn from each other and grow in communion and knowledge. We cannot wait to have you there!
Looking forward,
Paul Michael
