Dr. Alex Carter has been selected to receive the Esther M. Terry Award for his Distinguished Dissertation in Afro-American Studies, Ph.D. 2021.
Dissertation Title: "Afro-Aboriginal Encounters: Black Arts and the Global Politics of
Professor Shabazz will present the award at the Du Bois Department's graduation celebration on Thursday, May 12th at 4 p.m. in the Theater Room (#03), New Africa House, 180 Infirmary Way.
Dr. Esther Terry was one of the founders of the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies and was tapped to serve as its Chair in 1988. The Department inaugurated its doctoral program under her leadership in 1996. Dr. Terry continued to serve as Chair until 2007. After her retirement in 2009, she became Provost and later President at her alma mater, Bennett College. With the support of a generous donor, this award was established in Dr. Terry’s name.
