Fine Art Preservation Intern (*STIPEND), Deerfield, MA

Memorial Hall Museum, the oldest museum in Western Mass, collects, preserves, and interprets the arts, history, and culture of the Pocumtuck Valley region (the northern Pioneer Valley). The museum is a part of Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association in Deerfield, MA. PVMA is a non-profit organization which also oversees Indian House Memorial and the Old Deerfield Craft Fairs. The diverse collection at Memorial Hall Museum features over 25,000 objects that date from the pre-colonial era to today. The museum preserves and interprets the collection throughout 19 galleries in the original home of Deerfield Academy. INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: Maintain, preserve, and help to grow one of the largest fine art collections in Western Mass. Work directly with a fine art collection that includes locally-created works from 17th century to the present. Gain experience working in collections care, monitoring environmental conditions, and working directly in the fine art restoration process. Additionally, get experience using collections management software in a museum setting. Hands-on work with the fine arts collection will include conservation, storage planning, maintenance, and organization. This includes coordinating with off-site fine art restoration project(s) and assessing needs for restoration of works of art. It also includes assistance with the day-to-day management of the collection, including accessioning and cataloging of works of art and database entry.

PERIOD OF INTERNSHIP/EMPLOYMENT: Fall (September-December), Spring (February-May)
