How to Get an Intern

The Five College area offers great access to interns for arts organizations and artists, with a wealth of students studying the arts. For creative businesses and non-profit organizations, interns can infuse your organization with fresh energy, perspectives and a thirst for learning new skills and ideas to apply to their careers. For students, interning can help open up new career paths and build resume-worthy experiences. Arts Extension Service is hosting How to Get an Intern: An Info Session for Artists, Arts-Based Businesses, and Non-Profits as part of our Arts Entrepreneurship Initiative.
In this evening info session, potential internship providers will learn how to become a great internship provider. The workshop will cover the nuts and bolts of labor law compliance, how to create an engaging learning experience for your intern, and best practices for making the most of your intern's time. Participants will leave the sessions with an understanding of how to best design an internship to meet University standards and next steps on how to submit their internship opportunity for posting and promotion. Internship providers can also meet other providers and learn about what worked well to support their past interns. Through a variety of channels, AES will then promote the internship opportunities to arts and arts management students at UMass, connecting individual students with matching internship opportunities when possible.
“Expanding internship opportunities is one of the most exciting aspects of the Arts Entrepreneurship Initiative. Doing so meets two goals at once; students gain internship experience and artists get the chance to work with interested students and benefit from the student’s support,” said Dee Boyle-Clapp, director of AES.
Join us on Wednesday, May 1st 6:00 – 8:00 pm. A.P.E. Gallery, 126 Main Street, Northampton MA.
