The Arts Extension Service is excited to announce, HeART of the Garden, a collaboration with UMass Permaculture Initiative to integrate the arts into the Franklin Permaculture Garden. The partners currently seek a student artist or artists to propose a project that aligns with the values of sustainability and permaculture. Permaculture can be defined as a way of meeting human needs while increasing ecosystem health. It is based on three core ethics: Earth care, people care, and fair share. The deadline for submission is Sunday, March 1, 2020 at midnight. Submit your application.
Possible projects may include: creating a sculptural piece within the gardens out of natural or waste/recycled materials, creating a small mural (either paint or recycled materials) on a shed located in the garden, facilitating a participatory art work or presenting a performance (music, dance, theater) in the gardens. As a temporary public art piece, student work will be subject to approval by the UMass Public Art Committee.
The artist chosen will receive a $200 stipend and budget of $200 for materials/equipment. An AES Entrepreneurship Intern will present and promote the event in April 2020.
This project has a very quick turnaround! Projects must be feasible within the following time frame:
- Deadline for submissions Sunday, March 1st midnight.
- Selected artist will be notified by March 24th.
- Artists meet with curatorial team and provide materials/equipment list by Friday, March 27th.
- Prepare for showing March 30 - April 10.
- Showing date TBA late April.
- Wrap up tasks following event complete by May 7th.
Students interested in proposing a project may wish to view a virtual tour of the Franklin Permaculture Garden.
