Public Art projects, whether they are free-standing artworks or community-engagement projects, are excellent opportunities for Western Massachusetts artists to expand their vision, be paid to make art, build their portfolio, and have their work seen by a diverse audience within our region and beyond. However, the Public Art application process can be complex and often prevents many talented artists from pursuing projects or being awarded them: how do I fund a Public Art project? What is an RFQ? How do I incorporate public input while still maintaining my work’s integrity? What are my rights and responsibilities to the artwork once it is completed?
Join the UMass Arts Extension Service for the Introduction to the Public Art Process workshop to get the answers to these and other important questions. Open to artists of all mediums interested in creating public art projects, participants will receive a broad overview of the unique issues, skills needed, and steps required to create a competitive public art project application at the local and national level. This workshop will include an interactive exercise, information sheets, artist meet-and-greet, and Q & A.
The Introduction to the Public Art Process workshop will be held in the following locations on the following dates - click on the links below for more details about locations (including directions and parking). Note: the first half hour of each workshop will start with an artist meet-and-greet. The workshop commencing at 6 PM:
- Easthampton: September 21, 5:30-8 PM at Flywheel Arts Collective, 43 Main Street, Easthampton, MA
- Holyoke: September 28, 5:30-8 PM at MGHPCC,100 Bigelow St, Holyoke, MA
- Pittsfield: October 12, 5:30-8 PM at Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, 28 Renne Ave, Pittsfield, MA
- Amherst: November 15, 5:30-8 PM at the Jones Library, 43 Amity Street, Amherst, MA

The Introduction to the Public Art Process workshop is part of the UMass Amherst Arts Extension Service's Arts Entrepreneurship Initiative which serves artists through intensive workshops on the business of art, courses, publications, and an internship program to connect UMass and 5 College arts and culture students with individual artists and arts organizations. Project partners include 1Berkshire, the Amherst Public Art Commission, Amherst Art Walk, Gallery A3, Easthampton City Arts+, Flywheel Arts Collective, the ARTery at the Holyoke Creative Arts Center, the Pittsfield Office of Cultural Development, and the Pittsfield Artscape Committee.
These trainings are funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Local Cultural Councils of Amherst, Easthampton, Holyoke, and Pittsfield, and UMass Amherst.
