Orion, a nonprofit quarterly magazine about nature and culture, publishes essays, reporting, fiction, poetry, art, and criticism concerned with environmental issues and physical surroundings. Our catalog includes work by Wendell Berry, Barry Lopez, Mary Oliver, Michael Pollan, Scott Russell Sanders, Rebecca Solnit, and Terry Tempest Williams. Orion was twice given the Utne Independent Press Award for General Excellence, was a finalist for the National Magazine Award, and is regularly featured in various “best of” annuals. The Boston Globe calls it America's best environmental magazine.
Orion seeks an editorial intern to join our office in Northampton. An internship at Orion provides an immersive experience for students considering a career in the publishing industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to edit a feature story, stewarding a manuscript through the full development cycle. This process will allow for training and experience in the following areas:
- Manuscript evaluation
- Author relations management
- Rights and permissions clearance
- Research and fact-checking
- Content development and line editing
- Image sourcing and art direction
Throughout this process, interns will regularly engage with digital, marketing, and sales initiatives, allowing for a broader understanding of the integral role played by an individual story.
Our internship schedule follows the academic calendar, allowing for a Fall session (September – December) and a Spring session (January – May). The internship entails a commitment of 3-4 hours per week over the course of a session. This can be arranged into one or two days per week as needed during Orion’s operating hours (9-5 M-Th, 9-1 Fr). Because many of the responsibilities will involve close collaboration with multiple departments, interns are expected to be present in the Orion office for their scheduled hours.
