Design Internship, Double Edge Theatre

Double Edge Theatre's mission is to create a 'living culture' by developing the highest quality of original theatre performance, based on the long-term imaginative work of its ensemble of artists and their rich interaction with the communities in which the work takes place—and by cultivating a permanent center of performance, training, research, and cultural exchange at The Farm in Ashfield, Massachusetts.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:

This internship is ideal for emerging designers and visual artists who desire to work and learn within a deeply multi-faceted visual art process that integrates painting, sculpting, puppetry, and set creation. The Design Intern will assist the Design Director in the creation of mask, puppet, painting, and sculpture for Double Edge’s performance work. As Double Edge performs outdoors, design interns can expect to spend significant time working outdoors on all terrains as we integrate built designs into the natural landscape. The Design Director works dramaturgically to create visual meaning within the performance as well as technically, which allows for interns to learn about Double Edge’s unique approach to visual spectacle creation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work on all aspects of project design, as laid out weekly and daily by the Design Director;
  • Ongoing responsibilities for design set up and strike on a daily basis during the performance run;
  • A combination of solo projects to execute under the mentorship of the Design Director as well as working directly with lead designers, fellow interns and other project participants.

Experience in three dimensional visual art including mask and puppet building as well as basic painting technique is preferred but not mandatory.

Design interns will be mentored in approaching design research, the technical execution of design work, and the collaborative process of working within a performance context. The emphasis of this program is building the design needs of the performance, and learning and mentorship take place primarily through working directly with Double Edge’s designers on the performance. Internships begin and conclude with meetings with the Design Director to identify process, goals, expectations, and growth.
