In our current landscape, tackling the challenges that arts and cultural organizations are facing takes creative and innovative thinking. Lead the change in the field by mastering the business side of the arts — build your expertise through the Arts Extension Service’s classes in Arts Management this fall. Our highly relevant and instructive courses with renowned faculty who have extensive backgrounds in the field will bridge the gap of the experiential to the practical for aspiring and practicing arts managers, non-profit leaders, and creative practitioners.
Take your first steps by diving into the "business of the arts," with Introduction to Arts Management. Introduction to Arts Management guides students through the types of work that arts managers do and examines the current issues and trends now affecting arts management professionals. In the Arts Programming course, students use creativity and practical knowledge to plan and present programs from beginning to end. In working with an organization as a case study, students develop programs that align with the organization’s mission and plan events with contingency plans, reflecting the current climate of the field. Another timely course, Greening Your Nonprofit Organization, leads the way to create a more sustainable organization and cleaner and more just world. Cultural Equity for the Arts teaches how to address cultural disparity through the arts and provides tools to examine biases and create more equitable institutions. A key to any successful organization and arts business is having in-depth knowledge of your finances. In Financial Management in the Arts, this course looks at how to budget for uncertainty, and replace worry with clarity.
Whether you are a UMass campus student looking to supplement your major with an Arts Management Campus Certificate or if you are already working in the field and looking to add to your resume and increase your tool kit with one of our online certificate programs or Degree Program, AES courses and Degree or Certificate programs will take your knowledge and experience to the next level.
