UMass Students should use Upwork

Let’s face it, going through college without any source of income isn’t fun. Sure, you can get an on-campus job or find a job off campus, but both require you to have free time in your schedule on a consistent basis and sometimes that isn’t feasible, especially if you are overwhelmed with academics. I was in a similar situation but began to use Upwork, which is a freelancing website that I recommend to any student looking to earn money on their own time. Here are some of the reasons why you should be using Upwork!

Craft Your Skills

Upwork has dozens of opportunities for any skills or talents you might have. Personally, I have a lot of experience writing and have spent the last two years freelance writing for numerous online outlets. If you have any experience with video editing, writing, management, or anything else that can be done online, Upwork has hundreds of positions. In addition, having the opportunity to practice your skills could create even more opportunities for you in the future.

Network

One of the best things about being a freelancer is that you get to talk and network with people all over the world who are passionate and share similar interests as you. I have talked to clients in many different industries and they have helped me gain knowledge about specifics of the business world that I never knew existed. Also I have gotten numerous letters of recommendation from clients who have enjoyed working with me. In general, expanding your network any way possible is important at this time of your life and Upwork is a perfect opportunity for it.

Work When You Want

Perhaps the most convenient thing about working through Upwork is that you can work on your own time and as much as you want. Working remotely gives freelancers the chance to make their own schedules, which is ideal for college students. I always prioritize school before any work, but even after the fact I have a lot of time to work for my clients. Even when it is finals week, I can work less by simply not applying for more gigs or telling clients I am busy that week.

Overall, Upwork is a service that I use daily and have had much success with. Throughout the years it has provided me with a consistent flow of income for any expenses I might have throughout the school year. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to make money but doesn’t want to get a traditional job on or off campus.
