Freshman year I was in Worcester dining hall every day because I lived right there. So this year when I had learned that they are making a brand new Worcester dining hall, it was bittersweet. The facility had been the spot where I had strengthened many of my freshman-year friendships, or was the place I went when I needed to study for a big exam but was hungry at the same time. However, after I read about what the new Worcester Dining Commons is going to have, I was excited and jealous of the students who are going to experience it because I will have graduated before it opens. Here are some things you need to know about the new Worcester Dining Commons!
One of the best things is that the new building is going to be right in front of the old Worcester DC. With construction going on right now, it’s safe to say that the location is the exact same. This is ideal because Worcester is located in such a great area for hundreds of UMass students who live nearby. On top of this, its location is the focal point for many neighboring buildings where lectures take place, so students can go right after class.
As for the facility itself, the plan and operations for the new Worcester Dining Commons blows the current one out of the water. Currently, the DC has a pretty big dining area as well as a convenience store and small cafe located in other parts of the building. The plans for the new one not only include these things, but also a commercial bakery, restaurant, and support offices. In addition, UMass’s goal is to make this new dining common a hub for student life, and it will include a place for lounging, meetings, a fitness area, and even more. This is pretty exciting because there is no other building on campus like it.
The new DC is set to open in fall 2020, so I am pretty bummed that I will have graduated before then. For all current students or incoming students, the new Worcester Dining Commons is definitely something to look forward to. The current one will be demolished in summer 2020, so if you are curious at all about it, be sure to visit before then. I had always thought that maybe when I visited UMass years down the road I could eat there and reminisce, but it looks like I’m gonna have to enjoy it now while I can.
