My Personal Hobby at UMass

One of my absolute favorite things to do at UMass is to film funny and memorable moments I have with my friends. A lot of people say that your four years in college are some of the best ones of your life. Now that I am more than halfway through them, I can say that they've been the best years of my life thus far. The reason why I like to film the funny moments I have at UMass is because then they are forever solidified.

In an age of social media, with things like Snapchat, Instagram, and more, everyone is so concerned about what other people think of their lives rather than what they think of their own. By capturing little moments in my life in which I find joy, and being the only one (aside from my friends) that can see these moments, I really do think it will make my time at UMass even more powerful.

I started this hobby at the beginning of this year, and it has become more of a habit than a hobby. Whether I’m at the dining hall enjoying a meal with a group of friends or having a funny conversation with my roommate at my house, there are always moments in my college life that I would want to watch over and over again.

Someone could argue that recording these moments could ruin the authenticity and realism by experiencing them through a small screen, but more than half the time I’m not even looking at my phone when I film. The objective isn’t to become a famous professional videographer or a rich YouTuber, but rather to just have these moments to rewatch years down the road when all of my college friends are off doing their own things.

My father went to UMass and is always telling me stories about he and his friends at Worcester Dining Hall, the volleyball courts, or just hanging out in the dorms. I think that being able to tell the stories and actually show some of them someday would make it even better. I know this is a cheesy and wholesome topic, but truth be told I already have felt it working. Rewatching videos in my camera roll from the beginning of junior year has already established that nostalgic feeling I was trying to capture, now just imagine watching them again 10 years down the line!

To anyone who cherishes friendships and really appreciates their time at UMass or at college in general, I highly recommend just trying to record your fun moments. It’s as simple as pulling out your phone, hitting record, then putting it away. Everyone has a phone, anyone can do it!
