UMass Journalism department newsletter

As a double major in Communication and Journalism in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS), I get weekly newsletters from both the comm and journo departments. These newsletters include information regarding upcoming events, job availabilities, scholarship offers, and so much more.

If you’re looking for a quick link to see what’s going on in your field of study, the newsletters are a great way to do so. They provide with you easy access to resources such as events and meetings that will help you if need be. They also provide advising hours, and set little reminders of upcoming school events. For example, next week we will be choosing classes for the fall semester, as mentioned in newsletters.

I used to let the newsletters pile in my inbox before realizing how helpful they can be. They are put together by department chairs specifically to help us. So, its in our benefit to take advantage of them! UMass takes pride in how much the faculty here values helping the students, and it’s pretty cool having such effective and helpful resources at hand. The professors here care about our success and want to keep us up-to-date with all that is happening around campus. One way they do this is via newsletters.

A Look Back on Finals

Photo of the University of Massachusetts Amherst from a top floor at W.E.B Du Bois Library with the text reading: “Taking finals remotely, from a UMass senior."

As I finish a very unusual first half of my senior year at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I reflect on what it’s been like taking classes remotely — more specifically, what it was like taking fully remote finals. I will admit that without a teacher reminding me in-person, I quickly grew to be overwhelmed by all that I had due, and I was scared going into it that I’d miss all my due dates. However, with all the help of my teachers via Zoom office hours, and the power of sticking to a schedule, I feel very confident that I did well on them.
