Looking to get somewhere in the Amherst area quickly? Look no further than the Pioneer Valley’s own transit line! These buses run extremely frequently throughout the day to anywhere you could need to go in the Valley. However, the best part is that your ride is free with a valid Five College student ID.
The most frequent buses occur within a few miles of campus and take you into South Amherst, North Amherst, and even as far as Sunderland. I use these buses to get onto campus for classes, as they are a great alternative to driving for people who live off campus. The bus system even has its own iPhone and Android app that lets you check where the buses are in real time.
All across the UMass campus are MANY convenient bus stops that will get you to where you need to be. Additionally, located across from the Fine Arts Center at the Haigis Mall is an important bus stop that can get you even further than the frequent buses do. Buses that come here can take you to Hampshire Mall (also free with student ID) and to all the surrounding colleges in the area (Amherst, Smith, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke). But even better, this is the spot where you can catch a Peter Pan Bus to nearly anywhere you want. Whether it be Boston, New York City, or Philadelphia, these buses come frequently for everyone's convenience (these, however, are not free).
