Looking to visit some amazing museums close to campus? Well look no further! I have compiled a list of a few must-see museums in the Amherst region that will be sure to wow you. These top-notch institutions are not only cheap and close, but have many amazing works on display year round!
Located in the heart of Amherst College, Mead Art Museum is hidden among the college’s beautiful campus. The museum features both contemporary art as well as more dated pieces. Currently on display is an entire gallery of artworks that visualize the concept of time. But the best part is that admission is free with a valid student ID.
If you’re looking for a top-notch historical museum, you’ve come to the right place. The Emily Dickinson Museum features the actual house famous poet Emily Dickinson was born and lived in! The museum offers four differing comprehensive tours of Emily Dickinson's from varying perspectives. This museum is a must-see for all Five College students as it’s located so close to Amherst Center.
Although you may not be 100 percent familiar with his name, this museum features the works of the renowned picture book artist Eric Carle. Carle is most famous for his book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but has a wide-array of other incredible works. This museum will truly make you feel reminiscent of your childhood and help remind you of the important impact picture books have.
Last but not least, this museum is located on our own UMass campus in the heart of the Fine Arts Center! As a freshman, I had absolutely no idea this museum existed, but I wish I did. The museum of contemporary art cycles out exhibits often so students are able to get the most out of this experience. Make sure to check out this museums wonderful repertoire which is also FREE for all students.
