A Hidden Gem: The Quarters in Hadley

UMass Amherst’s location is perfect for college students because there is so much to do around the area. Between nearby Northampton, Hadley, and Amherst itself, there are dozens of places to eat and shop. However, you might want to do something else with your friends sometimes. One of the hidden gems that not many students know about is The Quarters, which is located roughly 10-15 minutes from campus in nearby Hadley.

The Quarters is a one-of-a-kind bar/restaurant where there is a lot more to do than just eat. Of course, you might be wondering why the establishment is named “The Quarters." The reason for that is that the entire theme of the place is old arcade games. It's not the biggest venue, but it is scattered with old school arcade games that are a ton of fun to play. Some of the games include Tetris, Frogger, Space Invaders, Mortal Kombat, and even more. Even though we can all play these games on our smartphones, computers, or video game consoles at home, The Quarters offers an environment that you cannot experience anywhere else.

Not only are the games extremely affordable, the food there is also fantastic and inexpensive. Going with a group of friends is the most fun because you can compete against one another in various games. Some of them are two-player so you and another friend can work together or compete against each other. Even the people and staff there are very friendly, and sometimes you might be lucky enough to spot a regular who is a master at a specific game. Watching adults play a game of Space Invaders or Mrs. PacMan at the highest skill level is quite the spectacle.

The Quarters also has many themed and featured events that are very fun and unique. One that immediately comes to mind is their Super Cereal Saturday. Every Saturday, there is an unlimited cereal buffet with old school cartoons playing on a huge projector. On top of that, you get to play unlimited games, all for a low price. There are more special event days/nights so if you are interested, be sure to check out their website.

Overall, The Quarters is quite the experience where you can go with anyone: friends, family, or a date. If old school video games, music, and good food is your cup of tea, be sure to check them out!
