Classroom Instruction

Although students do take two, specific writing courses at UMass (Englwrit 112 and Junior-Year Writing), we cannot assume students learn (or retain) everything they need to know from these two courses. Both do address research skills, incorporating sources into writing, and proper citation format, but it is important to re-emphasize such knowledge in courses across the curriculum, both to reinforce students' knowledge and to help faculty address specific research practices central to their course content. Teaching reseach skills and methods is most effective when it happens across the curriculum and within all departments.
