THE NEW ARCADIAN EXTRAVAGANZA AT THE
ADELPHI THEATRE.
In our Impression of the 15th ult., we gave some account of the "new and original Arcadian
pastoral extravaganza" written by Mr. Henry Byron and entitled "Pan; or, The Loves of
Echo and Narcissus," which has had great success at the Adelphi Theatre during the last three
weeks. We now present an illustration of one of the most effective scenes in which there is
an apparition of the rustic deity, attended by a train of satyrs, to express his displeasure with
the young people of the village because the fair Syrinx, whom Pan has condescended to love, is rather
inclined to love Narcissus. Mr. Toole is a most humorous representative of Pan, first disguised
as a peasant among the crowd of mortals and afterwards in the grotesque majesty of his mythological
character bearing a queer resemblance to the idol or statue of Pan, which is erected at one corner
of the stage.
