Librarian Isabel Espinal Presents Keynote at Digital Initiatives Symposium

Isabel Espinal, research services librarian at the W. E. B. Du Bois Library, was a keynote speaker at the 10th anniversary of the Digital Initiatives Symposium, held at the University of San Diego Copley Library April 29 and 30.

Espinal presented, “Digital and Physical Safety and Knowledge Work Bravery – Lessons from 33 Years in the Library DEI Space,” at the symposium, which included workshops, keynote and featured speakers, panels, group discussions and a variety of presentations about digital projects, open access and scholarly communication.  Participants represented a variety of organizations, higher education, public libraries, special libraries, museums and other cultural memory institutions.

Espinal has been a librarian since 1991 and is an academic engagement librarian for African Studies, Afro-American Studies, Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx Studies, Native American and Indigenous Studies, Spanish and Portuguese, and Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies at UMass Amherst. She has given presentations on racial equity in librarianship, library and information services to Latinx populations, information literacy, the climate crisis and libraries, Dominican women writers in the United States, Latinx literature and Taíno survivance in the Caribbean diaspora, among other topics.
