Travel & Housing

Air travel: The closest airport is Bradley Field, Hartford/Springfield. Frequent bus service is available (www.peterpanbus.com). Limousine service is also available (Valley Transporter, 413 253-1350) or you could rent a car. It’s an easy 1 hour drive from Bradley to Amherst. Drive north on I91 to the second Northampton exit, Rt 9. Turn east on Rt. 9, through Hadley (you’ll drive past several of the motels listed below as you go through Hadley), and continue in to Amherst Center, or turn north (left) on Rt 116 (just past two malls on your right) following the signs to UMass. You can park in the Campus Center garage, which is quite well signposted. Workshop registrants can get a discount parking chit at the workshop. You can also fly in to Boston, a 2 hour drive away. If you are traveling from Boston, you can take a Peter Pan bus to Amherst Center or the UMass campus (www.peterpanbus.com). If you drive, it’s easiest to drive on I90 (Mass Pike) to I91, turn north on I91 and follow the instructions for coming from Bradley, but if you like to save time and read maps, take the Palmer exit on I90 and come to UMass through Palmer and Belchertown. You’ll arrive from the east in Amherst Center.

Accommodations: Apparently rooms in Amherst are in short supply in August. You should make reservations very soon! Below, you’ll find contact information for some local hotels and motels: At the present time, the Campus Center Hotel, The Univesity Motor Lodge, and the Lord Jeff Inn are completely full. Students (especially): A few local participants have a room or two that you could crash in, rather than spending the $$$ for a hotel room. If you are interested in checking this possibility out, please send the particulars (who you are, how many, expected dates and requirements) to wswork@cas.umass.edu. The information will be passed on to the locals who have rooms so they can contact you.
