The Gospel of Matthew

Matthew is something of a relief. It is a difficult and subtle text, but one which does not have obvious signs of a complicated formation process. It seems to be a unitary composition. Its focus and message, however, are not entirely easy to grasp; this is partly due to conflicts between its indebtedness to Mark (which it includes, almost entire) and at its pronounced original deviations from and additions to Mark. We give samples of these complexities below.
