The Synoptic Problem
The Four Gospels

The Four Evangelists (from the Book of Kells)

In the previous pages, we have gotten a sense of the Synoptic Problem as usually defined: the relationships between the three Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. We reached a tentative solution of that Problem. We now widen the Problem to include all the Gospels, by adding that of John. In this section, we will investigate each Gospel, to see if there are signs that it was compiled over a period of time, rather than all at once, and reach a theory of the formation of that Gospel. At the end, we will consider whether our previous findings, together with these new observations, continue to support our tentative solution, or whether they will require something different.

We next consider whether the evidence so far suggests the existence of a source in addition to these four, either the conjectured "sayings source" usually called Q, or something different.
