For intervals of calm in her strenuous life, Florence Nightingale used to retreat to the home of her friends the Davids in Ivington. In admiration of the qualities of their occasional guest, the David family named their own daughter Florence Nightingale David. They balked, however, when the daughter wanted to attend University College in London. Instead, her early mathematical training was received at Bedford College for Women, from which she graduated in 1931. She was later to say of it,
Attempt to get a job, period with Pearson, finally after all winding up at University College.
