European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS)
The Junior Sinologues conferences had begun to falter; their last was held in 1972. Yves Hervouet, who had been a founding spirit of the Junior Sinologues, led the movement to reorganize as the European Association for Chinese Studies. It held its first conference (which was also number XXV in the previous series) at Paris in 1976. The EACS has had a special interest in Sinological Libraries in Europe, and under Hanno Lecher's supervision, maintains the most comprehensive list of China-related Internet sites, the IGCS.
EACS conferences to date, most of which have been thematic, are listed here:
- 1. 1976 Paris (XXV): Popular and Official Traditions in China
- 2. 1978 Ortisei - St Ulrich (XXVI): Understanding Modern China
- 3. 1980 Zürich (XXVII): China: Continuity and Change
- 4. 1982 Cambridge (XXVIII)
- 5. 1984 Tübingen (XXIX): China: Present and Past
- 6. 1986 Turin (XXX)
- 7. 1988 Weimar (XXXI)
- 8. 1990 Leiden (XXXII)
- 9. 1992 Paris (XXXIII): Changement et Idees de Changement en Chine
- 10. 1994 Prague (XXXIV): Genius Loci: Place, Region, and Chinese Regionalism
- 11.1996 Barcelona (XXXV): China and the Outer World
- 12. 1998 Edinburgh (XXXVI): Festivals: The Chinese at Work and Play
- 13. 2000 Turin (XXXVII): The Spirit of the Metropolis
- 14. 2002 Moscow (XXXVIII): Traditional Civilization and the Contemporary World
- 15. 2004 Heidelberg (XXXIX)
It will be seen that the new organization has been more fortunate than the old in establishing fellowship with Moscow and Prague.
