Revue Bibliographique de Sinologie

During its lifetime, the Revue was the leading European source of information on current Sinological publications. Its announced fields of interest were History, Fine Arts and Archaeology, Music, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy, Religions, and History of Science. Coverage included books and articles in Chinese, Japanese, and the major European languages. RBS was founded in 1956 under the editorship of Piet van der Loon, as part of the revival of European Sinology after WW2. Its initial purpose was to provide concise and objective summaries (in French and English) of the most important recent books and articles of Sinological interest. Editors in this first period were:

After a lapse of more than a decade, a new series was inaugurated in 1982, which narrowed the focus of RBS to works published in the current year, and increased the emphasis on Chinese publications. In addition to the summaries, the Revue began to print occasional essays surveying groups of works. Editors were:

During this period, in 1985, there was founded the Centre d'Études Comparatives du Monde Chinois, under the direction of Michel Cartier, whose purpose was the study of Chinese history and civilization from a comparative perspective. The Revue was taken on as an activity of that Centre. Editors of the Revue after 1985 were:

The Centre d'Études Comparatives was merged in 1996 with the much older Centre de Documentation et de Recherche sur la Chine Contemporaine (whose own institutional history went back to 1958), to form the Centre d’Études sur la Chine Moderne et Contemporaine (CECMC), the French Center for Modern and Contemporary China Studies, colloquially called the Centre Chine - the China Center). With the appearance of that issue (volume XXI of the New Series), and with the coverage of exactly 50 years of scholarship since its first appearance in 1955, Michel Cartier made the official announcement that publication of the Revue had ceased.
