Sinology

Erich Haenisch (Click for Profile)

Sinologists are often little acquainted with the tradition in which they work, and the tradition in which they work is thus in danger of being lost, even as they work in it. As Bernhard Führer's book on Austrian Sinology (Vergessen und Verloren) puts it:

Allzu rasch können Personen und ihre Arbeit aus der kollektiven Erinnerung verschwinden.

All too true. We stand on the shoulders of giants, but for many of us they are invisible giants. These pages are an interim attempt, one among several being made at present, to put on record something about the institutions and individuals who constitute the heritage of Classical Sinology.
