Warring States Results
LivesMost of the material available on the lives of persons in the classical period, when it exists at all, is controversial in its origin: it is meant either to exalt or condemn a historical person - or in many cases, a fictive person. In this difficult situation, evidentially-based notes on persons can be helpful. Here are a few which have been made available to us. Requests for other clarifications may be made via the link below. We will do what we can to respond to them.
The point to keep in mind, meanwhile, is that the classical period had little interest in biography or personality as such, but had much invested in the symbolic or authority role of a persona. Much Warring States writing is best viewed as the manipulation of personas.
