Dennis Grafflin of Bates, who in his student years was dissuaded from pursuing his own investigations into the formal structures of the Analects, wrote this generous assessment of The Original Analects:

"The Original Analects places the study of early Chinese civilization on a new and sounder footing. Its historicizing transformation brings to fruition the skeptical insights of the great Ching dynasty scholars. It puts the origins of Confucianism into historical context, and clarifies the intellectual processes of the entire foundational era of Chinese thought. It is an amazing achievement."
