SJS ListThe Shr Jing Seminar (SJS) is a forum for discussion between specialists in the ancient Chinese canon of poetry (the Shr Jing), and in the analogous poetry traditions of India and other ancient civilizations. Its chief focus is the growth process which can be recovered from philological examination of the Shr text, with immediate implications for linguistic and intellectual history. Comparative literary aspects will also be of interest, including general problems of canon formation.
The SJS message archive contains the entire conversation to date, for convenient consultation by current members (along with the conversations archived when SJS served different thematic purposes; this is the fourth avatar of the SJS list). There is also a facility for uploading drafts or published papers to the archive site, for discussion and comment by list members.
The Seminar is an invitational conversation among mutually known individuals. Normal expectations of scholarly civility and the scrupulous citation of posted material will apply. See the List Protocol page and other basic information in the Making Contact tour.
SJS uses the same basic methodology guidelines that govern the Project's work in the Warring States period. Like the WSW list and other associated conversations, SJS is sponsored by the Warring States Project of the University of Massachusetts, and is managed in the common interest by E Bruce Brooks.
