GPG ListThe General Philology Group (GPG) is a forum for the discussion of philological problems in languages other than Chinese, with emphasis at present on the Synoptic Problem in New Testament studies. A second but largely future emphasis is the Homeric Question, which we have tentatively reformulated as the Iliad Problem.
The GPG message archive contains the entire conversation to date, for convenient consultation by both current and new members. Drafts or published papers can also be uploaded to the archive site, for discussion and comment by list members.
The Group is an intentionally small and invitational conversation among mutually known individuals. Normal expectations of scholarly civility, and the scrupulous treatment of posted material, will apply. See the List Protocol page and other basic information in the Making Contact tour.
GPG uses the same basic methodology guidelines that govern the Project's work in the Warring States period. Its focus is historical. It is understood that faith-based arguments, or those designed chiefly to protect some point of later Church doctrine or Classical scholarly orthodoxy, or arguments for relevance to some issue in our contemporary world, fall outside the intended scope of the investigation.
Like the WSW list and its other associated conversations, GPG is sponsored by the Warring States Project of the University of Massachusetts, and is managed in the common interest by E Bruce Brooks.
