Classical Chinese Texts
Entry FormatThe typical CCT entry has five sections:
- Description. Observations and conclusions about the text, in standard order
- Details. Includes arguments underlying some of the above conclusions
- Other Theories. Mention of some conflicting views of the text
- Implications. Consequences of the above conclusions
- Suggestions for further research or reading
Of these, the first or Description section gives the most commonly sought information in standard order. That order is as follows:
- Title: explanation of the name by which the work is now known
- Date and Author
- Occasion and Location
- Proprietorship and Transmission
- Text: nature and size
- Interpolations (apart from normal accretions)
- Type (with reference to the appropriate Text Typology page)
- Similar Texts
- Scope and Form: content, period covered, general character
- Importance for present scholarly purposes
- Commentaries and Translations: a selection of the most useful
- Recommended Citation Form
Diagrams or extended discussions are given on satellite pages. For more detail on questions of Transmission, and for a fuller survey of the Commentary literature, see the corresponding entries in Loewe.
Non-text entries have a different form, varying with the needs of the subject.
