The Fleddermann-Price List

The following ten parallel passages where Luke is thought to be "more primitive" than Matthew were selected by Ron Price from Harry Fleddermann's book Q: A Reconstruction and Commentary (2006). They are instances where the Lukan member of the pair is thought to qualify as an "apothegm." As with the Jacobson list (with which this one overlaps at points), our working hypothesis is Mk > Mt > Lk, from which there follows the expectation that, in single passages also, Lk ought to be derivable from Mt. We note where this expectation is Confirmed, left Indeterminate, or Challenged. Our first comment, when discussing these passages on the Synoptic E-list, was that they were on the order of Synoptic small change, the sort of material on which great theories are decidedly not built. Such as they are, in any case, this is how we reacted to them at that time, plus some reconsiderations since then.
