John
Rearrangements
Scholars have noticed a number of passages in John which seem to be, not merely interpolated, but repositioned from another part of the text. In principle, a rearrangement is an interpolation which is needed somewhere else in the text. But since in principle any seeming transposition can be resolved as an interpolation if other parts of the text are removed, this category overlaps somewhat with the previous one, and some passages are treated under both rubrics. At this stage, it will suffice to consider the passages which were noted in this category, though in the end largely not accepted as such, in the 1955 commentary of C K Barrett of Durham University. We take them in the order of the text:
- Jn 3:22-30 ( > between Jn 2:12 and 2:13)
- Jn 6 (> between Jn 4 and Jn 5)
- Jn 7:15-24 ( > after Jn 5:47)
- Jn 10: 19-29 ( > after Jn 9:14)
- Jn 15-16 ( > somewhere before Jn 14:31)
- Jn 18:13-24 ( > rearranged as 18:13, 24, 14-15, 19-23, 16-18)
- Conclusion
