Commentary on Selected PassagesThese notes mix text critical and higher critical comments. In the interest of reader convenience, it has been thought best not to divide them into groups, but to list them in Markan order. Some links, marked with an asterisk, are to the discussions in the Sanders List (where the point at issue is Markan Priority) and other sections; use your browser arrow to return to this page from those notes.

No one who reads this page is likely to be unaware of other commentaries, but the author of these notes wishes to put it on record that he has found especially helpful the commentaries of Henry Barclay Swete (1898), A E J Rawlinson (1925), Benjamin Bacon (1925), C G Montefiore (2ed 1927), J Harvie Branscomb (1937), Frederick C Grant (1951), Vincent Taylor (1959), Robert Gundry (1993), and Adela Yarbro Collins (2007). Not that they are always right (not even the present notes are guaranteed to be always right), but that in one way or another they bring together much relevant information, and give the reader a lot to think about.
