Working with Second Language Writers
UMass enrolls a small but growing number of second language (L2) students at the undergraduate level; a small percentage of these students are international students, but a much larger portion are residents who have attended US high schools prior to entering UMass. Second language writers may take English as a Second language classes or Basic Writing before enrolling in College Writing. In order to create an inclusive classroom environment for all students, College Writing teachers should be aware of the wide range of writing and language experiences and expectations that L2 students (and indeed all students) bring to the classroom. Teachers who have questions about working with L2 students should feel free to contact Deirdre Vinyard, Deputy Director of the Writing Program. In addition, the Language Diversity Practicum (English 698K), provides an overview of serving L2 students in mainstream composition classrooms.
