Additional Student Services

Students may seek academic support from other campus agencies designed to either serve specific student populations or to meet student needs that are beyond the scope of the Writing Center:

The Bilingual Collegiate Program (BCP) is located in 101 Wilder Hall (545-1968) and offers a wide variety of services to bilingual students including a computer lab and study center as well as mentoring and counseling programs.

Collegiate Committee for the Education of Black and Minority Students (CCEBMS) is located in 218 New Africa House (545-0031). CCEBMS offers advising, advocacy, peer counseling, a computer lab, and a variety of tutorial programs.

Disability Services, located in 161 Whitmore 545-0892, determines the appropriate accommodations for specific disabilities for eligible UMass students. Such assistance may include interpreters and readers for hearing and visually impaired students and transportation for students with motor impairments. http://www.umass.edu/disability/

The Learning Commons, located on the lower level of the Du Bois Library, houses the University Writing Center and also brings together in one location such student services as academic advising, career services, tutorial assistance, library services, an OIT help desk, and other campus services. The Learning Resource Center, located on the 10th floor of the Du Bois Library (rm 1020), offers University of Massachusetts Amherst students a peer-supported environment to meet academic challenges through tutoring in a variety of subjects as well as workshops in study skills. Tutors and Supplemental Instruction Leaders are model students trained to assist their peers in achieving academic success. http://www.umass.edu/lrc/

Student Athletic Services, located in 234 Boyden Gym (545-4379), provides tutoring, academic advising, and counseling for all UMass athletes. http://www.umass.edu/sas/index.html

The Center for Counseling and Academic Development, located in 123 Berkshire House (545-0333), offers a wide range of clinical and skills-related services: psychological testing and counseling; learning skills assessment and development; special services for students with learning disabilities. If you believe one of your students requires assistance beyond that provided by a tutoring agency, please consult with Pat Zukowski in the Writing Program office before referring the student to this service.

Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support Center (UAASC), located in 615 Goodell (545-2191), is the central advising agency for undergraduates. Instructors should refer students in need of a retroactive course withdrawal for medical, financial, personal, or psychological reasons to a UAASC advisor. UAASC is also the umbrella agency for a wide variety of programs and services available to undergraduates such as pre-major advising, Counseling and Assessment Services, and individualized support. http://www.umass.edu/ualc/

United Asia Learning Resource Center, located in 691 Knowlton (545-1844), provides services including personal, career and financial aid counseling, student advocacy, peer mentoring and leadership training, and free tutoring.
