As preparation for Unit II, "Interacting with Texts," I asked my students to do this activity based on one we did in Pat's CD group.

As prompts for generative writing, I asked these questions:

  1. What is a text?
  2. How do you use texts in your life?

This led to a long class discussion about the meaning and purpose of texts, during which we defined and redefined text a number of times.

Our final definition was: "Anything that's read is a text."
