The Unit 4 assignment must
- extend the rhetorical goals (personal, academic, civic) introduced in Units 1-3 and articulate such goals to students.
- ask students to consider audience, purpose, and context and to examine their writing processes.
- indicate the process—or sequence of exercises—that will lead to the final product.
- consider the role of reading.
- culminate in a written essay.
- present students with topic and writing choices.
- be culturally accessible and sensitive.
- not require specialized student or instructor knowledge (e.g., musical expertise, film directing, etc.).
