This is a good exercise to assign as a homework when you are doing the Writer's Reflection/case study review. Not only does it give students a chance to look at the strengths of their own work, but also lets them try their hand at writing a formal cover letter for a job application.
Pretend you are applying for a job as a writing tutor. The application calls for a cover letter highlighting your knowledge of "college writing," and explaining what you believe good college writing entails. Using the sample format for a business letter, shown on page 488 of your Everyday Writer, craft a cover letter that responds to the following request:

Re: Tutoring position
Along with their completed applications, interested applicants should provide a detailed cover letter that explains what you believe are the basic elements of strong "college writing" and demonstrates your understanding of these elements.
