- A notebook for generative writing, in-class exercises, paper ideas, etc.
Required Writing
- Five essays (at least 1,000-1250 words). With each finished essay, students must turn in all preliminary drafts as well as any written peer and teacher response.
- Numerous, assigned “exploratory” writings and unassigned journal writing in a Writer’s Notebook.
- A final portfolio of all essays written over the semester.
- Other shorter assignments written in class and at home .
Attendance Policy
Regular attendance and preparation for class are basic expectations of the course. To put it bluntly, the class does not work unless everyone is here, on time and prepared. Still, students are allowed one week's worth of class absences during the semester, no questions asked.
Conferences
Each student will meet with their instructor at least twice during the semester for a one-on-one conference about their writing. A third conference will be scheduled during final examination week to go over each student’s portfolio and discuss the progress made during the semester. Final conferences are also mandatory, so student should be sure to account for a conference when making their plans for the end of the semester.
