Unit 3 Essay Topic

In this essay, you will put two or more texts in conversation.  That is, you will bring some of the texts we have read together to come to your own points and conclusions.  That means that you will need to represent the ideas and points put forward by writers in fair and clear ways and build on these ideas by putting the work of two (or more) writers together and/or by coming to your own conclusions.  This essay should include paraphrase and quotations, and you should focus on analyzing the significance of the points you make.

These articles reflect on how language shapes the way we understand our context.  Specifically, these articles address the ways in which our conception of what is "normal" is constructed through language and how this construction affects interactions within discourse communities. (For example, think about how a particular construction of "racism" or "language" influences how we understand privilege or how we look at multilingualism in our society.)

To write this paper, you might begin by thinking about a particular issue or
experience (from your life or from the essays).  Then go on to discuss this
issue or experience through the frame of this unit.  To do this, consider how
naming (and the naming of normal) has shaped this issue or experience.  You
should draw on the language used in the texts we have read in unit 3, and be
sure to discuss the significance of the points you make.
