Unit 1 Essay Prompt
In this unit, we have replaced a traditional notion of literacy with an expanded idea of multiple literacies. We have looked at the language of Im’ing and the medical world, we have explored story telling in various cultures, and we have examined code switching between home and public varieties of English.
For this essay, you will reflect on the essays we have read and the exploratory writing we have done to discuss an aspect of literacy that is significant to you. You may choose to discuss a discourse community to which you belong (as you did in exploratory 1), or you may choose to focus on a person or a story and the particular importance she/it has in your language/literacy.
As with all the essays you will do in this course, you are encouraged to draw on the readings we did and the writing you have already done in your exploratory writing. You may take passages directly from your exploratories to include in your essay. You may incorporate and quote from the essays that we read, although you are not required to do so.
