Tan paints a detailed picture of her mother’s language practices—from her “broken” English to her reading of the Forbes report, a text that Tan admits she doesn’t understand—and she shows how her mother’s practices influenced her own life as an author. Tan believes that home language “plays a large role in shaping the language of the child,” but she employs personal narrative, rather than specific ethnographic research, to explain her beliefs.
First, make a list of people who you believe influenced your own language practices. Then, choose one person and explain how, using detail, he or she influenced your literacy. Use specific examples of language to illustrate the influence you feel from this person.
